A chair can fit under a dining table and still feel cramped in the room. Before buying, measure the chair itself, the table opening, and the space needed to sit down and walk behind someone comfortably.
Measure the table opening
Record the distance from the floor to the underside of the table apron, not only the tabletop height. Compare that with the chair’s seat height and arm height. Armless chairs avoid arm-to-apron conflicts, but the seat and back still need appropriate clearance.
Measure the open width between table legs. Divide that space by the number of chairs you plan to place on the side, allowing breathing room between seats. Decorative bases and angled legs can reduce usable width.
Plan for pull-out space
Use painter’s tape to mark the chair footprint on the floor. Add space behind it for pulling out and sitting down. Then test the walking path with the chair area occupied. A route that works when every chair is tucked in may become blocked during meals.
Check nearby walls, cabinets, island edges, rugs, and doorways. If a chair will sit on a rug, make sure the back legs stay on the rug when the seat is in normal use to reduce catching at the edge.
Compare comfort and materials
Seat width and depth affect how a chair feels, while overall width determines how many fit around the table. Review the weight capacity and assembly instructions. For upholstered seats, consider how the fabric fits your household’s cleaning routine.
Sled-style bases distribute contact differently from four individual legs. Confirm that floor-protection pads are installed as directed and suitable for the flooring material. Retighten hardware according to the maker’s maintenance guidance.
